Yahoo’s Small Business recently asked nine experts on our best life lesson from business school. For me, it was reading Blue Ocean Strategy in my final capstone course that really struck a chord. What it comes down to is that most of the things you lean in B School are true, but it’s not what’s going to make you a success. You need to identify a differentiated strategy—a couple of things that make you unique—because that’s what will drive a groundbreaking business.
Other tips include relying on teamwork and knowing that connections are invaluable. This is one of the best times for a newbie entrepreneur or future business leader to network. You won’t find such a rich pool at the ready again.
Communication is critical, but don’t get comfortable. That’s when you stagnate. Know that having so many different perspectives can be your make it or break it point. Learn from others, ask questions, and don’t set up a bubble where you’re only surrounded by people like you.
Take advantage of B school, and know that there are many life lessons to be learned. Most learning takes place outside the classroom, and this goes doubly in this environment.
